Starlight (ongoing)

Margot
It wasn't often that Margot had to step out into a public library to hunt for books these days; there were more than enough of them left behind in the house she and her Cabal had come to inheret (that's what she called it, at least), and they tended to be more blatently magickal, useful, or outright mystifying in how little sense they made.  She could get (has been) lost in them for hours, easily, before she realized that her eyes ached from the losing the light of day to read in and had to eat some food.

Today, though, she needed chemistry books.  Something specific to do with density, and while she didn't know what book exactly she was hunting for, she had a feeling she'd find what she was looking for when her finger was trailing the spines along the shelves.

That's precisely what she was up to in this moment: trailing along the deserted non-fiction section dedicated to sciences less popular than animal studies and care.  She wore a yellow-check tank top that was loose on her frame, slipping often down one narrow shoulder, with a pair of white denim shorts that rode high on her legs.  Her hair was left down, a mass of dark brown that fell to touch her shoulders these days, tucked back behind her ears and pinned from her face with the help of the sunglasses she'd pushed up onto her crown.  Flip-flops smacked the bottoms of her feet quietly when she stepped away from one shelf and moved on to the other, head tipped to the side while she read along the spines in hunt of something that may be worthwhile.

starlight
Margot Travers's phone doesn't ring Amy Winehouse tunes. Or maybe it does; we don't know her choices, we don't know her life or the things that she likes or dislikes. She might have been a huge fan of the beehive-wearing singer- accursed member of the twenty-seven club. It comes across the nearest piece of audio equipment, started over the PA system. A solid baseline moving to something you could swing your hips to.

Meet you downstairs in the bar and heard
Your rolled up sleeves and your skull t-shirt-

The sound cut off from the PA immediately, but it kept playing on whatever digital device Margot might have had nearby. It was a crackling int he way that second-hand audio always did, sounded like someone had it playing over speaker in whatever end they were playing from.

You say why did you do it with him today?
And sniff me out like I was Tanqueray?

"Aurora, do you copy?" a female voice came from over the music, but the signal was bad. The library was practically dead today, but one had to won der how many people were getting this kind of weird feedback,

(test)

Margot
It was around the time that the little witch was contemplating how curious a choice of music Amy Winehouse was for a public library that the sound cut and switched.  First it was over the PA, and next it seemed as though someone had stashed an old two-way someplace nearby, or perhaps even a police scanner.

"Well that's curious...," she murmered to herself, head turned and big hazel-colored eyes searching for wherever the sound was coming from-- skimming along shelves for interruptions in the neat lines where something might be hidden.

Aurora, do you copy?

Margot's spine stiffened with surprise, and wherever her eyes had been at the time they stayed put.  Her ear was sharp on the crackling, straining to find the source.

[Perception 3 + Alertness 2]

Dice: 5 d10 TN6 (2, 2, 4, 9, 10) ( success x 2 )

starlight
The source, it would appear, was coming from several different places. It died out though as, slowly, wherever the sound was coming from was either shut off or ignored or closed out and considered a fluke.

The source, the nearest and most easily recognizable source, seemed to be with her things.

Margot
After spending a few moments turning her head this way and that in search of a sound that seemed to be coming from more places than one, she finally settled for reaching down to rifle through the dark brown bag she was carrying at her hip, slung across her chest and one shoulder by a thin leather strap.

Her hands searched rather than her eyes, fingers hunting for something unfamiliar in a bag that was (in a surprise to no one) meticulously organized.

Where are you?

starlight
"Repeat, do you copy?

It is, at that moment, that she realizes there isn't a foreign body in her bag. The sound was coming from her phone, and the static on the other end seemed to be coming in more heavily.

"Aurora-" there is a sigh, and the sudden skipping of the Amy Winehouse track.

Margot
Her fingers closed around her phone, feeling the very faint vibration of sound eminating from the speaker in their tips.  It was in that moment that she realized the sound was transmitting from her phone.  She paused for a moment, holding it firmly within her bag, and glanced up and down the library aisle for any company.

Assured there was none, she pulled the phone from her bag and looked upon it with bewieldered eyes.

She checked the screen, of course-- took a screenshot just in case something odd might be detected in the background later, then brought it to her ear to listen more closely, with a hello? hanging just inside her lips, wanting but afraid to come forth.

starlight
"Maybe this is the wrong frequency," the voice half-grumbled. The song in the background changed from whatever was playing before to Back to Black. Again, more Amy Winehouse. The voice was female, but not necessarily feminine. There was no discernable accent or markable features.

"Aurora, this is the LWV Polaris Two, vector seventeen J-Q, requesting permission to breach, do you copy?"

Margot
With the phone held to her ear, Margot blinked.

"Copy."  Her voice was flat and quiet.  She cleared her throat and continued in a low tone, trying to avoid drawing too much attention to her conversation amongst the books.

"Permission granted, go ahead."

starlight
"Good!"

Oh, that person sounded so happy on the other end. There was flipping of switches and the sound of something starting up in the background, "the crew of Polaris Two has taken on heavy casualties post-storm and has merged with the crew of the Voidship Eleanor. This is acting captain Ezra Tate."

"Who should we expect to rendezvous with upon reentry?"

starlight

Margot
"I--.... I, uh..."

Margot blinked and looked around, then promptly untucked the book that she'd been toting about with her from under her armpit and set it back upon the shelf.  Up on top of the other books so that it could be replaced later.  With a quick adjustment of the strap across her chest she turned and started a quick-stepping stride out into the main aisle and toward the front door.

"Re-entry?  Wait, where are you re-entering from?  In what?"

And with a brisk hurry that nobody felt it necessary to interrupt, Margot shoved her way out the heavy sets of doors entering the library and out into the dusk.  The air was still warm from the blazing hot day, but relief came with the shade when the sun tucked behind the jagged mountains.  Her eyes were scanning the parking lot and sidewalks as she listened for the answer.

starlight
"Sending you coordinates now of our current location-"

The sending of the coordinates made Margot's phone make a god awful noise. What precisely got send to that phone is hard to tell, but once it was done making the dying harpy sound, the voice came back on and she had a text message in her inbox (which, if checked, gave coordinates that looked like a GPS location with about seven too many categories of reference in it)

"I don't know if the Polaris Two would hold up to reentry into Earth's atmosphere unless dimensional travel is readily acceptable."

A beat.

"Are you with Control?"

Margot
"Damnit!"  Margot yelped and jerked the phone away from her ear when it started to screech, cringing and twisting her head so her ear tucked close to her shoulder, like that would somehow chase the ache and the ringing away from it.  In a mild panic she stuffed the phone under her armpit to try and stifle the sound it was making, and gave an apologetic and nervous smile to a mother who was walking her young son out of the library and back out to their car.

When the sound stopped, she looked down to her phone screen and checked the text to pull up the coordinates on the map.  After investigating them (and determining whether she should walk or drive to reach them), she started a hesitant plotted path toward the apparent distress call's intended destination.

"Am I with--...," she had brought the phone back up to her ear in time to hear --reentry into Earth's atmosphere, and scowled hard enough that one would get the impression she'd end up with age lines between her heavy eyebrows before anyplace else on her face at this rate.  "Look, Cap'n , I'm not in control of very much down here.  Did you say you're coming back in through the atmosphere?"  That, followed by her craning her neck and twisting about to scan the skies.

starlight
"Oh..."

There's a light in the sky that isn't supposed to be there. Margot knows it's not supposed to be there and it's a tiny, tiny pin of a figure but it is posed over the mountains and the coordinates she could largely suss out seemed to be located somewhere inside of a mountainside.

"... this is going to hurt, isn't it?"

There's a hiss.

"Can we keep this channel open for further communication?"

Margot
The quiet question of impact tugged some kind of a cord in Margot's chest, and she paused in her trek out into the trees.  The library hugged up against a park property whose edge was lined with trees and the gradual slope up a mountain slide.  The witch's flip-flips slipped around under her feet on patches of loose dry dirt and shady grass when she passed beneath trees, but she didn't seem too terribly deterred.

The search of the skies yielded her sight of a pinprick of light that wasn't quite a star, certainly wasn't a plane.  She hissed along with the sound on the phone.

"Yeah," with a hesitant but bracing tone.  "Yeah, it probably will."

Could the channel stay open?  Margot flexed her brow briefly again, then started forward once more by pushing a hand off the trunk of a young tree to get herself in motion.  "Yeah, I... I suppose so."  She didn't figure that this Captain of the Starship Eleanor would have an easy time reconnecting with anything after her impossible (this was a dream right?  was this reality reminding her what the ridiculous was while she slept?) craft endured its apparent collision course with the side of a mountain.

Vriqiohr

Samir
[aw shit what is going down today]

Dice: 1 d10 TN6 (2) ( fail )

William
They made a pretty decent team when it came to Overwatch. William kept his damned mouth shut unless he needed an assist, he was a good listener, and he followed directions pretty damned well. Honestly, if he could be the kind of person he is when he's playing video games he would probably be an adept by now. But he is not, and he is not.

He is, however, very persuasive. This is how Samir usually ends up in trouble when he hangs out with William. William is like a goddamned duck when it comes to both paradox and trouble, and someday it's going to catch up with him but one could hope that, for once, the fact that all of his friends are Right And Proper Fucked won't catch up with them today.

The blond had conned Samir into coming out because William had requested assistance upgrading the hardware on his PC. Not his laptop, mind you. William had actually broken down and acquired a desktop and had been doing to awkward task of trying to get better at figuring out WTF is going on with it. He hadn't done a terrible job, but he had promised food and the opportunity to mock him mercilessly to Samir if he would help with this one thing.

They were going to meet at Union station and take the same train off to whatever store they were headed to. Save on parking and save on time. Also, William wouldn't have to rive or ride in a car.

Because fuck cars.

Samir
So much time has passed between the last time Sam saw Will and today that he had almost forgotten why he was mad at him in the first place. It isn't as if he has a physical scar, Kiara having healed him beyond what any mundane practitioner of medicine could have done for him. What he does have is the memory of losing yet another huge chunk of time to Quiet. Disappearing into the woods, staying disappeared thanks to Reality's poor job of solidifying him as a person in the world.

But he is a person, and as a person he had grown beyond tired of Will and his thoughtlessness and his appetite for danger. The ease with which he and danger found each other. It was better that the two of them only encountered each other in multiplayer game lounges, only heard from each other when one was giving instructions over the head set or cracking a joke.

He had very much not wanted to answer Will's invitation to meet him downtown and help with his computer ineptitude. He had asked him if Hermetics weren't supposed to be able to learn things in a hurry, why the fuck don't you use your Mind Sphere, dude you're fucking hopeless. But he came. He's here.

Sam steps off the train as one in a sea of dozens, easy to overlook because it is as if he is not there in the first place. It's a million fucking degrees and he's wearing a zip-up sweatshirt, unzipped, over a faded band t-shirt and jeans. Aside from having cut his hair and kept it trimmed, little has changed about him physically. Maybe he's a little taller. His voice sounds the same as he comes up behind Will.

"What's up, Asshole?"

William
"Phfft-fuck!"

He had been drinking a Sprite when Samir came up, didn't notice him when he came up because Samir is forgettable and the next thing he knew there was Sprite coming out of his nose and he was covering his mouth and turning around- "Don't touch me I'm disgusting."

Grant you, there was precisely fuck all of a chance of Samir touching him but it was warning enough that, yes, he was gross and probably didn't need to be touched because, y'know, Sprite and the fact that he was kind of sweaty and wearing shorts. He still looked the same, but maybe a little more tan.

To his credit, though, he felt different. Fearless, dauntless, unafraid to do what he needed to do even if it was terrifying.

Denver
The train station has the standard amount of people. There are couples coming to and fro. Commuters trying to hop back on the train to catch it in time to get back to the office before the boss eats their ass for being late from lunch for the third time in two weeks. You can tell who those people are by the look on their faces.

Oh, and Mormons.

There were a group of Mormons standing about ten yards away from William and Samir. They had pamphlets. Two men and two women.

Samir
That he feels different is not a startling development for Sam. He had progressed a few winters ago, and was happy to stay in his trailer with everything he needed to survive, peeling himself out of his chair a few times a day to inhale the air outside and walk around the warded bit of land he kept up with River. There is nothing he needs from the city or the people in the city, and yet he keeps making exceptions.

Never mind exceptions have almost gotten him killed before. More than once. The young man in front of him now the correlating variable in the two most recent incidents.

"Yes," he says, his hands still in his pockets. "You are."

He spares a glance for the Mormons, if only because holy shit there's like four of them since when do they let the women out of the compound.

The first of them- a tall, lanky man with dark hair and the perpetual five o'clock shadow- pointed at the pair of mages standing nearby. There was the subtle nudge to the short redhead next to him but almost in unison the entire group of modestly dressed people swung their attention in their direction.

They were staring, whispered amongst themselves and wore expressions of almost awe before one of them- the small redheaded man, got nudged forward. He started his approach.

"Sir?" he said, quickened his approach and looked at Samir with a look that paralleled hero worship, "oh it is such a blessing to meet you."

Samir
Sam does not even hesitate before taking a deep breath and taking a long-legged step back to come as close to hiding behind Will as he can, considering the fact that Will could hide behind a fucking fence post. There is no hiding behind Will.

"I--heh!" Jesus what is going on. "Why's that?"

William
William has, during the course of their not-meeting-in-person, not puyt on any weight. He's tall, but he's never been a particularly physically imposing guy, but he was more than willing to put himself as far between Samir and Creepy Mormon Dude as he possibly could.

"Heyyy look, this is great and all, but we've already been to the motherland. Read the book, we're good," now please go away, the rest of that statement went.

Denver
The man didn't seem deterred by the fact that there was now a person between him and Samir, and he continued his approach only to stop right before he ran into William.

"You're him, He Who Speaks Midnight. The Scion of Beyond- Vriqiohr," he whispered, and the name coated with honey and all the flies trapped within it.

William
Dude, Samir. He totally thinks you're the actor from that new web series... something about people acting out a dorky tabletop group's game? Something like that. Felt a little too much like Harmon Quest without the charm]

William
Be flattered, if you roll with this you might be able to get some free shit.

Samir
"... oh."

Given Sam has never heard of either the Scion of Beyond or whatever that new Youtube series that was like Drunk History if the History were Dorky TT Groups' Sessions and also not funny, he doesn't feel the acute need to get them the fuck away from him. They're just overenthusiastic fans dealing with a case of mistaken identity. That happens to people sometimes.

Not to him necessarily, but he's heard of it happening.

"Oh, I... yeah, I get that a lot."

William
William, however, does feel the need to leave right about now. He placed his hands out and began the careful extrication of himself from the man who was literally an inch away from being pressed against his chest. Hands out and caaaarefully moving him away from them.

"We've really got to be going, Mister Midnight talker has... uh... a really busy schedule, don't we?"

William
[Oww?]

Dice: 3 d10 TN6 (2, 6, 8) ( success x 2 )

Denver
Clearly, the redhaired man was not too keen on being removed from Samir's space via the twiggy meat shield that was standing between them. The movement was efficient and brutal. William put his hands out and the man took a grip on his wrist and soon enough had the taller blond turned around his his left arm hiked up somewhere between his shoulder blades in a position that made the would-be bodyguard infinitely more manageable.

"So you've met the others?"

Samir
It isn't the efficiency with which the ginger puts Will into a secure hold that has Sam flinching but the speed. Now that his meat shield is gone Sam starts to step back, not attempting to be polite anymore. If he has to unleash something nasty to resolve this - aka, if he ends up in Quiet because of the idiot who doesn't know self defense or reverse holds even though he loves trouble so much - he doesn't want to be close enough for chunks of viscera to hit him.

"Hey, man," Sam says, his palms out of his pockets and presented to show he's unarmed, "it's cool, we're all cool, I... if you say I'm Vrikor, I'm Vrikor. But I'm not answering any more questions until you let him go."

William
That could have hurt a lot worse than it did, and he inhaled some sharp breath that broadcast the fact that this hurt.

"I got this," but with the sort of forcefulness that says fucking run without coming out and saying it. William knows something, he knows something that he can't come out and say because he's stuck in the kind of hold that would make Israeli special forces golf clap at its execution.

Denver
The grip didn't falter just yet, he didn't seem keen on letting go and at that juncture the rest of his creepy crew was headed their way. This was starting to look more and more like a problem. As though having someone in a police hold wasn't already a problem.

"And then you will come with us, meet the others, yes?"

Samir
[wp: just leave him there man it's what he wants]

Dice: 7 d10 TN6 (1, 3, 3, 4, 7, 9, 10) ( success x 3 )

Samir
For the three seconds it takes Samir to make a decision, he has a raging internal debate.

Though all Will can see is empathy and uncertainty, he knows the Virtual Adept. Sam is the sort of player who will allow his character to die if it means the team will gain more points, but has rarely been in that situation. He's an intelligent individual who can predict other people's behavior based on their previous actions. The fact that Will has made it this far behaving the way as he has been behaving ever since Sam first met him is astonishing.

It is not up to Sam to decide whether Will's time is up or not. Some part of him believes that the Hermetic can, in all seriousness, handle four people by himself. That he is in this situation to begin with is fucking bullshit, and plain old-fashioned bad luck. But Will, bless his stupid little heart, is willing to stay behind so Sam can get the hell out of there.

And then you will come with us, meet the others, yes?

"Nah," Sam says. "Fuck that."

And then he turns and books it down the platform.

Denver
[Because I can't find the mechanics of this damned pursuit thing in m20, I think I've figured something out.

Running speed is 5 x Dex = meters traveled on 1 success. You need 1 success to maintain speed and each success thereafter gives you 5 extra meters per turn.

Roll to run is dex+athletics, diff 6 (base, until you hit people and then difficulty will be modified)

example: Nora has Dex 3, so Nora moves 15 meters per round (provided she doesn't fail or botch). Nora rolled 3 successes on her Dex+athletics roll. So, this turn Nora moved 25 meters.

Jake has Dex 4, so he moves 20 meters per success. Jake rolled 3 successes so he moved 30 meters this round and is gaining on Nora.

So, uhhhhh, basically just roll Dex+athletics and I'll do the weird math and shit.

"I just need to talk, stay," she insisted, and there was a push against that shield and it was as though it just bounced off of him like a bullet into a brick wall. Not strong enough to break through but certainly enough to put a dint in the side of the foundation. This was, all the while, when Samir was being pursued by several of the modestly-dressed cultists. The taller one started his run, and was gaining on the stationary Virtual Adept while the woman in her bare feet and longer skirt was doing her best there. There was the effort put in, and written clear about her face that she wanted to be there. That she wanted to meet Him. The One. The glorious Vriqiohr.

The other man reaffirmed his grip on the younger man and reapplied pressure there, but not enough that it really seemed to make much of a difference. The other mage was stuck, but not stuck in such a fashion that he wasn't going to be able to really act or function. He didn't necessarily need to move.

"It's fucking stupid to incur Vriqiohr's wrath. Let. Him. Leave," William barked with the sort of firmness that only came when a Hermetic was dressing someone down, and if there was any doubt in his ability to do so, it was dashed when the other woman- with her red hair and soothing voice and serpentine feel about her- stopped and her expression turned to that of pause, then mortification, then fear. She stopped her pursuit, backing away slowly.

"I-" she stammered, shook her head and put her hands up, "oh, great one forgive me-" she told Samir, stopped in her tracks. The people around the scene seemed... mostly weirded out by all of this. The next train was departing already, and the station was clearing out.

William
It was unfortunate, of course, that they just weren't fast enough, because with little fanfare their glorious god-figure disappeared, leaving the cultists in awe and leaving the rest of the people in the station confused.

And then shrugging it off as though the man who disappeared had never even been there.

Samir
[Heather, you are a marvel. Thank you so much! <3]

Stuck in the Closet

Denver
POP.
That was the sound that came first. It was the end of the day and most people were going home, save for the regulars who were farting around the courthouse at the end of the day. People with late times on their trials and people who had nothing better to do than file their paperwork at the last possible moment or bang the legal clerk who also didn't have anything better to do on a Thursday at the courthouse. (Because why not- it's called networking, thank you very much.) Or sit in on cases because a voice told you to.

But there was the problem of that pop. The problem of that hard, harsh sound followed by the shattering of light bulbs and rattling of windows and a feeling that felt like something grabbing onto your lungs and squeezing too hard, like you're internal organs are a goddamned stress ball. Then? Release, sudden release when all the air came out. The walls shook.

"COME AND TAKE ME," from the next courtroom over, room 7b. Criminal cases could be fun, couldn't they?

Andrés
If asked whether inquests or being called as an expert witness in the afternoon was a bigger pain in the ass, Andrés would not be able to choose between the two. On the one hand, inquests were typically brief affairs but having to stop what he was doing to go to the courthouse and hope the family didn't want to ask him any questions led to an element of unpredictability he found unsavory.
Questioning, like the reason he was here today, tended to be more straightforward. But in this particular case, the defense called him in around two o'clock and kept him up there long enough for the jury to start nodding off and the prosecution wanted to use him as an opportunity to tear a hole in the defense's argument and ay, ay, ay. By the time the cross examinations were over the judge was calling a recess for the day and that is why he's still here this afternoon.

He was on his way back downstairs when that change in pressure - or whatever the hell it was - caused a rain of glass and a booming and a squeezing. As he rested a hand on the wall to steady himself, the damned thing shook.

Then that voice.

Now, Andrés sighs a beleaguered sigh and debates the merits of investigating versus just getting the hell out of there.

William
He didn't care about the case. Didn't care about the damned ghost or the fleeing mortals or any of this, all he really cared about at that juncture was getting smooth the fuck out of that court room and as far away as possible because William knew Damned Good And Well that this kind of display attracted the wrong sort of attention as soon as people knew what it was.

That pop could have been written off as a number of things. The shaking? Easily could have been a bomb and written off as some terrorist attack instead of what was actually happening and William? Darling creature, gave precisely zero fucks about any of these things and, instead, chose to be concerned with the fact that he didn't want to be in the room when the backlash hit from whatever it was that guy was doing.

"Jeezus fucking christ god damn it fucking ghosts I hate-" oh,  look, passing Andrés- "go go go-"

POP.
The lights flickered. Bulbs shattered. Reality growled in displeasure, but was content to doll out enough rope to let one hang themselves with.

Resentful. AS though that resentment, that hatred could permeate even the fabric of someone's vital being. That was magick- more than that. This was the type of magick that had been done in advance, held together and prepared for months and ready to be unleashed on an unsuspecting world. There was nothing that could be done about it, no countering with careful manipulations and applications of rationale and scientific ingenuity.

But beyond that, the feeling in the air spoke of a man who could build a damned atom bomb if only to spite an ex-lover. Who would build something volatile and unstable, like a mixture superheated and left on a bunsen burner too damned long when you knew good and well it only needed to be set to a simmer. Volatile. With all the unpredictability that came with it.

This? Was a forced hard reboot of every consciousness within a radius that wasn't sufficiently warded. The tiny (somewhat literal) explosions, the electric feeling, the haywire lighting and glass breaking? That was a secondary effect that came when our practitioner threw a temper tantrum that not everyone was sufficiently impacted by their Work.

Andrés
A moral imperative is no good if the body gets itself killed because the mind has no sense of its own boundaries. And Andrés, for having an ember still glowing in that charred, fist-sized muscle most people call a heart, does not often subscribe to the concept of a moral imperative. Only when will not cause any further harm.

It helps that compared to last year, he has a sense of self-preservation. Passive suicidality is so 2016.
Once it registers that this is not a man-made calamity but the result of some Awakened son of a bitch getting obliterated by paradox, he has to prompt his legs to run. Not towards the problem, but away from.

Then here comes that boy Margot is so fond of. At least he thinks it is. All those tall blue-eyed white boys start to look the same after a while.

"I'M GOING I'M GOING."

And off they go.

William
There were a grand total of five places William knew how to get to when he went to the court house. One was a bathroom (too much glass), two court rooms (one of which was currently being obliterated by a dude mid backlash), a stairwell (other side of the building) and-

"HA!"

Janitor's closet.

he reached for the door knob and skid a little once he did. William had been actively attempting to be less of a complete idiot when it came to doing anything physical, but he still wasn't graceful by any means. Grabbing a doorknob while running opened the door, sure, but it also almost knocked him on his ass.

Andrés
"ARE YOU--"

The Etherite doesn't bother finishing his sentence, just grabs the doorknob while the Hermetic is recovering and puts a hand between his shoulder blades and shoves him into the closet. This isn't the spot he would have chosen to hide while waiting for ground zero to return to safe levels of paradox, but he's not going to bank on his ability to make it to the stairwell before the shockwave overtakes him.

Slamming the door shut behind him, Andrés throws down his briefcase, cracks it open, and removes a clunky PDA-looking device into which he immediately begins punching commands. Without turning on the light. The screen glows green, how much light could a guy want?

He didn't even notice the shove, all that happened in William's mind is that one minute he's standing outside and the next minute the door is shut and he's standing inside. William reached for the door knob and had the good sense to actually lock the damned thing.

He's had experience with this particular closet and knows that, yes, you can lock it from the inside. It didn't do very much good because a sufficiently angry person (or HIT mark, or ghost, or sentient toaster) could probably kick it down after awhile.

"Right-"

Sufficiently angry ghost could knock that down. He didn't know what kind of spirits were there but he Did Not Want to Deal With That. So, he went along his merry way to find sidewalk chalk and was content to half talk to himself (Command the universe, thank you) and try and get things going

Great. He's stuck in a closet with a crazy person. Margot sure knows how to pick them.
With a sigh that shouldn't be able to inhabit a person of his size, Andrés plops down on the floor cross-legged and ignores whatever the kid is doing with the chalk. He doesn't particularly want to experience another person's backlash. If he's going to do something that results in his getting kicked in the nuts so hard he's flossing with Reality's shoelaces for the rest of the week, he likes to at least plan a head a little.

What does it feel like when reality is throwing a temper tantrum.

The closet shakes, because everything shakes. The news would callt his event a bomb exploding, as far as anyone knew. Reality was more forgiving for the unawakened, but for this? An example needed to be made. A message given to every living and aware source of will that this would not be accepted. That such grand scale flagrant disregard for the rules of society would be delt with immediately.
It's the first hit that makes it the worst. The first hit that sends cleaning products off the shelf and makesbrooms fall. The light bulb shatters, but luckily it hadn't been on so all it does is rain down glass.

Then? There was screaming. It had started as a sound that was human but morphed into something more, something glass-ridden and corrupted. There was a sound, and that sound came again but was no longer human. Could no longer be called human.

Reality had to set an example, and let the Avatar of this offender know that its ministrations would not be tolerated.

So, darlings, suffer.

Andrés
Although the forcefield manages to absorb a good half of the energy blasting through the concrete walls and the wooden door, Andrés is still knocked onto his ass - literally - by the shockwave that does manage to permeate their little shelter. He feels as if he took a soccer ball to the face, and though he's seeing stars, he's got a small amount of sense to anticipate that that isn't the last of the backlash. So he stays his ass where he landed and allows himself to feel a moment's gratitude that he didn't vomit. Yet.

William
William has, in recent memory, actually had his ass handed to him a couple times. Once was at a bar in New Mexico over something he couldn't actually remember at this particular juncture and another was from a Flambeau who didn't like to be told how incredibly, irrevocably wrong he was. What kept him moving at those moments was being able to keep quiet and take it. Before that it usually came over parties or when backed into a corner that he couldn't charm his way out of.

This? Was a first. There was no charming reality. It didn't give a fuck how clever your words may be. Reality hits hard, and it was enough to make the taller young man double over and cough like he was a freshman taking his first hit of weed. It was not a good cough by any means, and his hand went to his mouth quickly to try and keep the sound down.

He looked up once the hacking fit stopped.

"Are you Doctor Sepúlveda?"

Andrés
"Yep."
That could have been the end of it, but William has the honor of sharing space with someone who has already overexerted the muscle responsible for keeping him from saying something inappropriate into a microphone in front of fifty other people.

"Are you the one who wants to bang my student, or are you the one who keeps getting her into trouble?"

William
"Why not both?"

Andrés
Slow, concussed breathing as he absorbs this information.

"Thank you for reminding me to clean my shotgun."

He has about a dozen other ways to inflict pain and/or sterility upon the young man, but he doesn't need to show his cards right away.

William
"I've developed a full disclosure policy on stupidity, rest assured-" yep, there's coughing again. He took a look at his hand and made a face when he realized he was hacking up a bit of blood, "-Margot is a fully consenting and aware party in my stupidity."

He looks at the door. Can't really say he didn't make a dumb decision before, he's at a fucking courthouse where a guy is having a massive paradox backlash. He could have told that ghost to fuck off and continued eating cereal and ignoring it.

"She thinks you're cool."

Andrés
As the Hermetic whose name Andrés has not only forgotten but shown no interest in recollecting rambles on in an what appears to be an attempt at reassuring the older Awakened that Margot has consented to the past stupidity and knows what she's getting into, Andrés flicks his eyebrows and picks up his device again.

Tapping out instructions means he can't say something awful. It might be mean, but the split attention takes some of the sting off.

"That's great, kid."

"There's a really fucking pissed off wraith outside on top of this, so... yeah, just a heads up. You got a way to keep from being a meat suit?" Do you need one?

Andrés
Andrés sets down the device and scrubs his face with his hands, muttering, "Madre de dios este día va a terminar nunca..." Deep breath. Hands down. "Do you?"

William
The sound he made was something that was between stifling a laugh and hacking up phlegm. He also was making his happy way through his bag to find a pack of what were probably cigarettes. Or not. He dug one out anyway, "Breathe deep and think about how it's all bullshit anyway."

Business deals gone bad

Elijah
Elijah has problems with focusing.
Anyone who has met Elijah knows that he has a problem with focusing. Knows that he takes in too much sensory information at all of the wrong times and has had people express very vocally that they will take it out of his scrawny ass (slender, asshole, thank you very much) and probably just never study with him. It was fine when he had finals to study for or he had some innocuous thing that Kalen left him alone to do for various and sundry reasons.

Now, it was different. If he didn't have results and didn't measure up, he was done in the order. Done. Completely done. He didn't think he could possibly fail out, but at the same time h didn't think he could get a C in a harp performance class but he nearly did after not showing up to a midterm recital. (Car accident, he had almost said fuck it and just taken the C but he would have had to explain to his parents how you get a fucking C in a harp class.)

Anyrate, not the point. The point was that he had to take in a lot of information very quickly and seem like he had a good foundation and like he knew what the fuck he was doing.

So, he put in an order for some adderall from a dealer he'd done business with before, and left good feedback. Five out of five, would repeat the transaction again. Adderall and ecstasy. Because seriously, why not?

So, there he was, on a bench waiting. And reading a book about the history of the printing press- he was actually interested in it. Somewhere, his club kid cred was tanking.

Samir
Elijah has good timing. If he had tried to reach this dealer a week ago he would have found him to be decently divorced from reality but that's a story for another time. He may not be able to form a mental picture of the guy in his head but he has the handle he uses on the Dark Net (slakhani) and he has a good idea of his level of intelligence and education (proper grammar and punctuation when he types!) When you're dealing with drug dealers the less you can remember about them the better anyway.
No better way to regain one's club kid cred than mixing stimulants with MDMA.

His dealer comes out of the darkness skinnier and wide-eyedier than the last time Elijah saw him. He is not disheveled and unwashed like he just this moment decided to crawl out of his apartment but he does have the jittery look of a man who hasn't gone outside in a while.

In his more alert state Elijah can appreciate the way Samir walks. Long strides with his hands in his pockets and his shoulders bunched as if to make it more difficult for someone to grab him from behind. He has long black hair he keeps tied tight in a knot at the base of his neck. Beat-up wine-red Doc Martens and black jeans and a leather biker jacket overtop a band t-shirt. No jewelry. He's chewing his lip as he rounds the bend towards the kid with the resonance like disorder with a purpose.

Sam feels like the needle when it first hits your vein. A stranger staring at you from across the room. He looks like he needs a fucking cigarette.

"Yo," he calls just before he's right up on Elijah's bench.

Elijah
He's not yet at the point in his magical career that he can say that his timing is the result of being clever and having mastery of reality. No, right now, Elijah can just chalk up good timing to good luck- sometimes, he gets a break. Prefers to deal with this guy on the Dark Net because he remembers very distinctly that they guy with… you know… hair. Hair and probably not glasses. Anyway, he remembered that the guy very distinctly did not look like he was going to kick Elijah's ass. He could have been a blackbelt in something- appearances are often deceptive- but he definitely gave the feeling that beating the shit out of Elijah wasn't on his to do list.

(There are things Elijah remembers, vaguely, things he doesn't think about often but occasionally come up in deals. He doesn't know how lucky he is, well and truly. Doesn't remember what he'd said to Nines- except that he'd heard some disembodied voice say that the man was a murderer, that Elijah shouldn't push it. He doesn't remember how much he bought, or much else, save for that moment when the needle hits your vein, then euphoria, then just… nothing. He doesn't remember taking too much, doesn't remember how he got home or even how he got to the ER. Just remembers his dealer/"friend" Megan telling him that she wasn't too keen on one of her best customers dying on her and not to run his mouth off.)

The less you know, the better.

He does appreciate the way Samir walks, the way he seems to be aware that things could go from bad to worse. Guy looks like he could use a cigarette; Elijah smiles at him like they're friends. They both know that's not the case. "Hey man," he says as he puts the book aside. Careful with it. Clothes are comfortable, but somewhat professional. Slacks, button down shirt, a vest (who wears a fucking vest?). Clearly, while club kid fred may wain, his hipster game was strong.

Samir
So he's graduated from sweatpants and crippling physical pain to two seconds away from revealing himself to have a fucking pocket watch. Kid must be a Hermetic. No other Tradition treats its initiates as if they've just been sent off to boarding school and then acts surprised when they wander around at night looking for drugs and sexual adventure.

This park is crawling with vampires according to some people. Something could come out of the dark at them at any moment. Samir could stop the electricity in a person's heart with the power of his own fucking mind and he still looks as if his own mind is the thing causing him the post trouble.
Elijah has no way of knowing that. For all he knows the dude has a hit out on him or he's pissed off a rival dealer or he's high himself. Good dealers don't use their own product but they don't know each other.

A friendly smile begets a nervous twitch of a response and Sam keeps his hands in his pockets as he sits down beside Elijah.

"You, ah..." Right. Gotta act normal if they're going to do this shit out in public. "You ready for classes to start?"

Elijah
[Manip+sub: This is completely normal.]
Dice: 7 d10 TN6 (1, 3, 5, 5, 5, 6, 7) ( success x 2 )

Elijah
He does. Have a pocket watch, that is. Checks it right quick, as though it was going to show anything other than the same time it always does. Except for when it does. You know, standard cat logic. Watch goes back in his pocket- because why else would he wear a damn vest except to carry a freaking pocket watch.

"Yeah, kind of? I'm taking some short courses that are pretty much kicking my ass," he says, that much is the truth, too. It wasn't so much a short course and more I'm making a horrible lifestyle decision that is going to essentially make me lie to my family for the rest of my life but then again that could also be true of going to college to play the freaking harp (and the piano, but mostly the harp). Elijah has a good track record for lying to his parents, so everything is golden there. I'm taking my medication or it was the only class open or of course I'll come back to Louisiana after school ends.
"There's something about doing difficult things that I was gonna say, but I totally fucked it up."
Punctuated with a laugh. He's comfortable, like they know each other.

Samir
"If it's easy, it's not worth doing?"
Aside from both participating in a parallel economy they have a core group of associates in common. It's strange to sit beside someone about whom he knows so much simply from going on a digital message board and skimming his posts. Not strange in the sense that he hasn't done it before because he does shit like this all the time. He's a reality hacker. He can learn a person's life story within minutes of meeting them as long as he can conjure up an Internet connection. That isn't how he's gotten to know the Awakened who call Denver home and that isn't how he intends to get to know them.

Still: he knows Elijah has had a storied time the last year or so and Elijah doesn't even know this guy's name. He knows he's a good-looking brown-skinned kid with a Canadian accent. Even that will fade once the dealer's walked away.

Pretending to shoot the shit is a good way to keep suspicion off of them and what they're doing but it also helps Sam practice his social skills. Maybe takes the edge off the loneliness riding him like a vengeful spirit for a bit.

"Or, ah... what'd Teddy Roosevelt say, about envying people leading difficult lives well."

Elijah
(Straight intelligence: GAH, I have totally heard this quote before!)
Dice: 3 d10 TN6 (4, 7, 7) ( success x 2 )

Elijah
"Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty… I have never in my life envied a human being who led an easy life. I have envied a great many people who led difficult lives and led them well," he replies to Samir. He does remember what it was, or at least remembers the quote well enough because he remembers having to write it down fifteen times in middle school because his history teacher had been insistent that they learn one important quote from one influential person a week. One of those awkward things that people try and make you learn in school and it stuck with him.

He can also recite a hand full of poems by Walt Whitman. He prefers William Carlos Williams. They weren't talking about poetry, though.

"What is that? A Tautology? When you flip two things- not the dog in the fight, but the fight in the dog? Or all the crap that big teacher guy in Mystery Men was saying?"

Samir
Samir never experienced the joy of public middle school. Having a hippie physics professor for a mother gave him plenty of world experience but it didn't do a whole hell of a lot for teaching him how to survive in group settings. Everything he knows past a seventh-grade level he knows because of his own natural curiosity and his own nerdish intelligence.

Poetry isn't anything he has much experience with. He is not a creative type. He has a certain elegance in the way he writes and he looks like the type of guy who might like spending his nights at indie rock shows or hanging out with other counter-culture chain-smoking types. If he does he's the quiet one in the group. Too busy sitting back and listening to participate.

So this is difficult for him. Difficult and necessary. Loneliness won't go away if you ignore it any more than voices or intrusive thoughts will go away.

"Or, ah... A or not A. If A implies B, then not-B implies not-A. If at least one of A or B is true, and each implies C, then C has to be true, too." A beat. "I don't know shit about grammar. I think Roosevelt was just ripping on people who skate through life without ever encountering any..." He clears his throat. "... any adversity. The dude rolled out of bed and pissed manliness."

Elijah
"Didn't he, like, punch a bear or something?"

A beat.

"I'm not even joking, I thought he did things like wrestled animals and busted trusts because, y'know, fuck monopolists."

Samir
The question is so absurd Sam actually laughs. He looks like the sort of person who doesn't even know how to smile. Turns out he has quite a nice smile. Takes care of his teeth even though he smokes a pack of cigarettes a day. Laughing doesn't do anything to dispel the electric anxiety from his eyes but it does loosen him up for a few seconds.

Elijah isn't even joking. Fuck monopolists. Sam considers this and then pulls out his smartphone and starts to tap the screen as he talks.

"They didn't have Wikipedia back then. Bullshit had to travel by telegram. The amount of physical evidence generated by rumor propagation, even if he didn't actually punch a bear, if he--okay." A beat. "He was hunting in Mississippi and the dogs found an old bear they 'chased until exhaustion,' and the guides clubbed the shit out of it and tied it up so he could come shoot it, but Roosevelt didn't think it would be sportsmanlike. So he had one of the guides shoot it just so it wouldn't keep suffering. A political cartoonist named Clifford Berryman published a cartoon about him refusing to shoot the bear, and that's how Teddy Bears got their name. Google doesn't say anything about him punching one though. Sorry."

He bookmarks something called 'Dirtbag Teddy Roosevelt' and puts the phone back in his pocket.

Elijah
"Whaaaaat?" he laughs, starts to lean over to see what was on the screen before sitting back up. Elijah concluded that he probably didn't need to be looking at the smart phone of his drug dealer on account of the fact that there are Things He Does Not Need To Know. Sits back up and shakes his head. Looks sideward and notes that the guy does have a pretty nice smile.

"I had no idea how that came around, I thought it had something to do with bears? But seriously, thought he punched a bear and I thought that's a really weird thing to do if you are off Mike Tysoning bears," he looked at his book, then back, "I totally knew I liked Taft more."

Samir
"Wait, was Taft the one who looked like a walrus?"

Ah hell. If they're going to sit here talking about bear-punching and whether or not it ever actually happened then Sam is going to light a fucking cigarette. He extracts a small yellow case made out of plastic and from it extracts a filtered cigarette he rolled himself. Avoiding contaminants requires a certain amount of paranoia. His lighter is a cheap plastic thing he picked up at the gas station.

It's worth mentioning that Sam's hands smell like rubbing alcohol. So does his phone. Elijah might not have noticed this until he leaned in to glimpse the screen and even then it might not have registered. It is not a strong smell but it is a persistent one.

He shucks a filter out of the pack and puts it into his mouth without touching it. Lights the tip and shoves everything back into his pocket. Presumably this ritual takes as long as Elijah's response. It isn't universal collusion. Sam would rather listen than speak.

Elijah
"He did kind of look like a walrus," Elijah confirmed, "most people just remember the thing about the bathtub? But by current standards Taft is probably about the size of a regular husky guy. Totally not going to judge his presidency based on his BMI, but the guy did more than freakin' Roosevelt did. I mean, he did a bunch of anti-trust stuff and he improved the postal system, which was a big deal for the time because the postal system was super important. Hell yeah effective postal system."

He looks at the case, plastic, and takes in the faint scent of rubbing alcohol. Elijah propped his arms up on the back of the bench, sat there like he was comfortable with the space. talked like they were friends, because the young man didn't know strangers.

"Did you know that some people suspect Lincoln had Marfan's Disease?"

Samir
[int + academics IDK DO I?]
Dice: 5 d10 TN6 (2, 2, 6, 10, 10) ( success x 3 )

Samir
The question makes Sam frown but then again plenty of things make Sam frown. He's a pretty sharp guy and he can crack jokes when he's of a mind to but his mind is a preoccupied place. If Elijah takes away from this encounter that Sam seems as if he's got someone nattering in his ear that oughtn't be that wouldn't be an unfounded observation.

They are not kindred spirits. Sam isn't haunted by the dead. It's his own thoughts that won't leave him alone.

He frowns and then he cleaves a plume of smoke out his nose. Ashes lazy into the grass and adjusts the way he has his feet planted on the sidewalk. His back has not been touching the bench this entire time and it doesn't start now. If anything he's slouching where before he had been bunched up. Turned towards Elijah like they're friends sure but if the two of them are friends it's hard to tell which is The Weird One.

"Marfan's the one where super tall people don't have enough connective tissue, right?" he asks once his airway is clear. "I mean, that'd make sense. He died way before Marfan wrote about it, eh?"

Elijah
"I think so? I have no idea, I know it's the disease when you don't have enough connective tissue and people end up being, like, super tall and having weird ribcages. I just saw something on TLC when I was in high school about the Mütter Museum? Which was, like, really freaking cool and I kinda want to go at some point… but I'm not actually super keen on flying?"

Which was amusing. He was willing to jump out of an airplane, but he was not willing to stay there and just ride out the flight. Whatever the case.

Somewhere, in the bushes, there was something rustling. It wasn't' anything strange, nothing really. It was the time of day or night or twilight that people didn't often have reason to be hiding in shady places, but there they were. Something rustled, and it seemed innocent enough. Something rustled and it made a sound. Something that gurgled and burbled and sounded wet and sickly-
Then, stopped.

Samir
Sam is on his feet and spinning towards the noise before he can even stop and think if he ought to consider the possibility that he's still fucking hallucinating.
It was the sound. He's heard noises like that before. His eyes are bright-wide in the dark and his nostrils are flared as he tries to keep his breathing under control. Now would be a shit time to panic. He holds onto his cigarette a moment longer.

A quick glance at Elijah. He doesn't have to ask whether Elijah heard that if Elijah didn't react to it. He'd rather hallucinate than have to admit Grace was right and he shouldn't come to Vampire Park after sundown.

Elijah

Samir
[so alert]
Dice: 6 d10 TN6 (1, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10) ( success x 3 )

Elijah
There is an awkward moment, and it is awkward- even Elijah knows it's awkward, when one has to wait and see if the person with you heard something. He's holding his breath, looking sideward at Samir and trying to play it cool. Trying to pretend like he didn't just hear some unpleasant gurgling noise and now would be a shit time to panic.

Beyond that, the blond has no self preservation instinct. So, he's standing up, turning his attention the other way, and starting a slow approach to whatever is in the bushes.
---

Samir can see it, just the peeking of something sickly white and sallow in the bushes. He sees it, with patchy hair and awkward posture. It seems like something that might be human- possibly. Human is a relative term in some instances, but it isn't the sight of the thing that catches his attention. It's the sound, it's the slight crunch and sickly slick tearing of muscle.
He can see something in the bushes with it, splayed wide open and filled with vivid reds and putrid pinks. He catches a look at a tuft of fur- something that goes into the air and is tossed.
There isn't enough blood on the ground to warrant a second humanoid figure in the bushes. Crunch, rip, sickly sweet ironbloodsweatshitgarbagedead.

---
"What the fuck?"
Yeah, if there was a question of whether or not Elijah saw it, there wasn't one anymore.

Samir
Normally Sam has to psych himself up to touch another person. Psych himself up or smoke a joint. He keeps a bottle of hand sanitizer on him and avoids shaking hands when he's introduced to other people and that's easy enough to chalk up to the fact that he's a hacker. Anyone who spends all their time inside breaking into other people's digital lives doesn't have much time to figure out how to interact with them in the meatspace.

Sam tries. And Sam isn't stoned right now. Turns out adrenaline is a powerful substitute.
His customer may not have a sense of self-preservation but neither does the dealer have a strong stomach. Sam reaches out and grabs him by the upper arm. His fingers are cold and his grip is not powerful. This is not a man who knows what the inside of a gym looks like.
"Don'tgotowardsitwhatthefuckareyoudoing?"

Elijah
Someone is holding onto his arm. Elijah isn't particularly strong, either, but he does have a bit of stamina. You have to if you do the kinds of stupid things Elijah does on a regular basis. He does stop, though, eyes don't come off the bushes though. He thinks about things Dan's told him recently, but we digress.

"… something really stupid that I kind of regret thinking about," crunch, snap, swallow.
The thing sits up, viscera hanging from its too-wide mouth. It has an almost comical frown, like a gulper eel from the depths of the abyss. Its neck is too long and its eyes are small. Too small for its face and so achingly human. A robin's egg blue with the softest doe-eyelashes. Its hair was oily and dark. Its arms long- or at least, one set of arms was long.

There was a second on the big cage, cracked at an angle that was almost reminiscent of a praying mantis. Not the shade of the rest of the body but a lovely golden tan, set against an almost breathtaking set of breasts- its belly distended and sloshing fullness. Its legs bent the wrong way. The place where the nose should be was flat against the face.

It turned and Elijah immediately stopped moving. Waited. Held his breath.

Samir
Something happens to the unseasoned mind when it encounters something only the reptilian brain knows to fear. Even stepping out in front of a car or registering the approach of a barking dog is enough to shut down the conscious thought of a person afraid. The concept of fight or flight being the only two options is an old and misleading one.

More often than they do anything else when human beings are confronted by danger they do nothing.
These two young men are not just men. They're fucking wizards.

They both still fucking freeze when that thing rises up out of the bushes. Sam already threw down his cigarette in favor of grabbing Elijah's arm and now his fingers create a vice around his biceps. His other hand claps over his own mouth like to stifle the voice he's too nervous to generate anyway. He's shaking. Being quiet about it. Shared instinct that stillness will get them out of this.

At least if they're going to die they aren't alone. Right? At least Sam isn't. If Sam dies first Elijah won't remember he was even here to begin with.

The Madame
It opens its mouth- oh god why did it have to open its mouth? It doesn't so much open as it flops downward, exposing row after row of tiny, saw-like teeth. Viscera hangs from its lower jaw and tumble down onto the ground. Its tongue laps at the air, not unlike a snake would to taste what was around them. It's small, painfully human eyes fix on something near the two men- the ones who bend reality to their whims.

The small hands on its rib cage knit their delicate fingers together, rest over the top of its breasts in a mockery of modesty, as though it would be embarrassed to be in such a state in front of mixed company. The vestiges of humanity, the kind that give way to rage when those lovely blue eyes detect something-
Disgust, perhaps?

Rage, a natural response. The sound it makes is that of two women screaming, the sound of broken glass in a garbage disposal, the sound of a vicious harpy. How dare they be appalled.
(Initiatives, please?)

Samir
There's no time to think and he doesn't have the capacity to do it anyway. Samir doesn't have a child or a soulmate or a family that takes up the forefront of his desire to get out of here alive. Even his cactus would forget about him if he didn't come home one day. That doesn't mean he doesn't have anything to live for. He's going to change the world one day.
Tonight about he's going to do is have to change his shorts.
He still has his hand around Elijah's biceps when she shrieks.

Elijah
There is this moment, a quiet section when his stomach tightens and fear holds onto his mind and all he can think is that he isn't a coward. He is not a coward, but this is terrifying. All he can tell himself when his lunch threatens to come up on him and he feels everything run cold and his focus goes pinprick fine is one thing: this is wrong. He knows that the creature can't possibly be human… but it was. The cant of its head, its eyes, that sound it made that was so fucking wrong and so fucking human.

"Oh, fuck," his voice cracks.

All he can think is to stand there, straight and tall and to try and focus. Says something under his breath that isn't in fucking english, that isn't in a human language, but here goes nothing.

The creature leans forward, lays its long and slender arms on the ground. It hunched forward, its vertebrae straining against the skin and it lurched forward bounded towards the two men and its stomach sloshed as it ran, as it tried to bridge the gaps between them. It was hungry, god it was so hungry, don't you fucking judge me hungry.

This is what happens when you corner two people who are capable of defending themselves in means that make literally no sense to anyone else. The creature lunges, bounds forward and skids around, stands up to a height that is tall and oppressive. Its head cants to the side, mouth still open tongue exploring the air around the two men. Its eyes didn't seem focused. Its breath was atrocious.
There was the barest hint of Chanel number five on the air, clinging to the creature's hair. The last bits of human vanity.

It's standing up lanky and tall and tasting the air around them and it can feel the judgment, can feel the disgust and the frustrations and all it can think of and all it knows is an undying hunger. It can feel its body rotting, dying and the vestiges of humanity slipping as its more human side clawing for recognition. It stands up, lanky and tall- and rakes its chipping, brittle fingernails over whomever it may hit.

The Madame
It makes an agonized sound, and the smell is atrocious. The smell is that of burning hair and searing flesh and it is in pain, it is shocked, overwhelmed, not thrown off its game just yet. It sat up, looked with the kind of confusion that only comes from sleepers. It couldn't find a source, but that was definitely electricity. It shrieked, raised its hand high and raked its claws down-

Except.. it didn't. Except, it should have been rough and aching but, instead, all the ire was restrained, all the strength sapped from its too-long limbs, bloodied fingers running across the young blond man's cheek, down the front of his shirt, leaving bloodied marks across his skin and along the front of his vest.

The air felt cold and everything was so achingly quiet and burst forth into something loud. Something terrible, something that rips apart at the seams and gives way to something that is beyond reason and suddenly painfully real. This is the truth of the world, set apart in blue eyes and gaping jaws- there was something larger here. there are people who are pawns. The world is made of components and they're interchangeable.

The beast before them is art. Terrible, astounding art from the imagination of some horrible genius.

Samir
Later he will contemplate the significance of the story of a dead president's refusal to shoot an incapacitated predator even while recognizing the mercy it would grant. He doesn't want to kill this thing. It was alive once. Underneath the horror of it Samir can recognize it as something that was human once too.

It's caught in an arc of weak electricity and if he executes the program again there's a very real chance he'll kill this thing.

He doesn't want to kill this thing but he doesn't want to die either.

Elijah
Don't touch me.
It's all he can think and he can feel blood on his cheek and there's a scratch at the place where he can feel his pulse beating and he wants to scream. he wants to drop the effect, he wants to run away, he wants this to all stop and all that comes to Elijah's mind is the imperative don't touch me. His heart is beating too fast and his cheeks are pale and-

"…"

Words stop for a second. He's about to throw up, the world is small, and somewhere his mind recognizes that this was a person. Can catch the ebb and flow of human emotion there, the pain, the frustration, the hunger that overrides the human parts that are left. What life is there after this?
He can't stop now. Can't drop it now, he has to finish this.

The Madame
It shrieks again, lunges forward towards Samir because it's hungry, because it wants something, because it's angry and scared and hurt and like the more basic instincts it needs to fight, it needs to attack, it needs to consume until it can feel nothing.
[action: Bite Samir. Because you're delicious.]

Elijah
Words finish, the focus shifts, and it is through absolute force of will that Elijah even finishes what it was that he was saying. Ooh look at me my name's Elijah I can oppose my Prone to Quiet roll. *upgrades to Level 9 Madness and goes home*

Elijah
There is a sound something makes when it is in pain, when it is dying, when its life is slipping from it and the world is going bleak and oh god, oh god this is the end and all it knows now is hunger and all the basic, decent human parts of this monstrosity are screaming for all of this to end. Oh  please, please let this end. And the two men are standing there, wide-eyed and intent and certain that they want to walk away from this.

Samir pushes, executes programs and protocols and whatever pleas and bargains and ultimatums Elijah issued to the universe are met. The world is bright, then smoldering, then charred. Then, it is beyond charred, the beast is molten, melting, little arms curling inward until all that was left was the scent of ozone, similar to chlorine and stinging their eyes and noses and what had once been a towering mass was reduced to little more than unspecified bits and charred pieces.

A lock of hair. A single jagged fingernail.

Samir
Adrenaline and shock help him ignore the fact that the melded forms of two once-women tried to take a chunk out of his fucking face.
The fact that he hits the wrong key and his effect arcs back on him and knocks him on his ass helps too. Whatever else happens after that is nothing to which he is privy. He can't see or hear Elijah's effect unleashing on the mound of sentient flesh that came out of the bushes.

Though the wound bleeds and he obviously ate quite a bit of paradox just now Elijah has plenty else to worry about right now. There's a pile of smoking ash where a monster once stood and though he shrugs off his own backlash as much as one can claim to shrug off backslash. The nausea and the shaking come after the adrenaline releases its old. That smell.

On the ground Sam makes a low miserable noise that sounds like it would be a plea to some sort of deity for assistance if he weren't an atheist. If there weren't a chorus of voices around him arguing over whether one of them ought to tell him not to open his eyes.

They're the only voices he will be able to make out under the crackling of electricity and someone or something far-off in the distance screaming over and over.

Elijah

Elijah
His stomach lurches and he closes his eyes, strips off his vest and uses whatever clean pieces there are to scrub the blood and the bits of something off of his skin and there is a forced calm punctuated with shaking hands and a decided moment where he feels like he's going to heave, like something is going to come up but nothing does.

He can worry later- because there is a sound coming from the man on the ground, "hey-"
it's all he can think of to say, still holds his vest too tightly in his hands and his steps are uneven and the world still feels like it's skipping beats and traveling too quickly and everything is fucking screaming. "Hey, we need to clean you up," it's all he can think. It bit him, and Elijah doesn't know if whatever that thing was happened to be contagious and-and-and-

He takes a few steps forward, almost reaches for Sam to try and check if he's okay but the universe seems intent on telling him to slow the fuck down.

Samir
On the ground Sam digs his heels in an unconscious test to ensure he still has control of his body. He's breathing fast and panicked but if this were just a panic attack he'd be fine. There are drugs for that. Drugs would do something for panic. This is not an organic psychiatric meltdown but how the hell is Elijah supposed to know that. He doesn't even know the guy's name.

He sits up. He still has his hands jammed in his eyeholes. Vocalizations with every exhalation and there's too long a pause for him to be responding to Elijah but Time and Elijah are having a bit of a tiff at the moment.

"SHUT UP!"

Opening his eyes doesn't make it any better. He shouts and springs to his feet and tries to brush something Elijah can't see off his arms and chest and face. Blood coats his palm and he doesn't realize he's bleeding but he is beginning to realize that he's slightly fucked. Panting respirations don't do anything to calm him down and he jumps the way he'd jumped when they heard the creature in the bushes earlier whirling around to face something Elijah can't see.

Stopping up his eyes didn't help. Stopping up his ears doesn't help either but it's worth a shot.

"SHUT THE FUCK UP!"

This is what is referred to in English as Not Good.

Elijah
"Dude-dude!" that's all he's got, that's all he can think to say and the seconds are ticking on or maybe they're minutes, or maybe it's all moments and there are times where he is fairly certain that the measurement of time is kind of bullshit but whatever they were, the time seemed to pass at the wrong rate. Some seconds too fast, others too slow, like it's an oval instead of a circle. He inhales sharp and knows he doesn't need to fucking touch Samir right now because that? That doesn't end well.

"Stand still," he says, he insists, and he tries to keep up, has a horrible feeling that the man is going to run, he has a feeling he's going to run and he has to keep up. He has to keep up because all he can figure is that he's had a psychotic break or he's tripping out or there's something with the blood and the bite mark and-

"You're bleeding," is all he can say, looks for something that he can't see. Tenses and lets a feeling of dread wash over him when he realizes that either Samir is hallucinating or Elijah can't see something very fucking dangerous. He reaches forward, puts a hand on his arm without thinking. Doesn't realize how bad this could be.

Samir
"GET THE FUCK OFF ME, MAN!"

He whirls around and shoves Elijah. That's the extent of his violence. He shoves Elijah and something about the way he shoves him suggests it's less to maintain his own sense of personal space than it is to stay away from the younger man so something worse doesn't happen. Blind madness in his eyes. For all Elijah can tell he doesn't even recognize him right now.

Sam's blood is on Elijah's clothing now. The Virtual Adept stalks off and he's hyperventilating still sounds like he's very close to letting despair collapse in on him like snow through a rotted roof but he appears to be in the same physical condition as he was in before the monster bit him.

"I don't have to listen to them," he says low like he's talking to himself. A mantra. "I don't have to listen to them I don't have to listen to them..."

Now's as good a time as any for Elijah to practice calling an adult.

The Keeper of Secrets

Kiara
[Dex + Ath, just cuz we're exploring and stuff]
Dice: 6 d10 TN6 (2, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8) ( success x 1 )
Kiara
The early afternoon sunlight couldn't quite penetrate once they were inside the cave.
It smelled rich inside; pungent with the scent of wet air; earth; the lingering presence of wildlife that had or did use it as a refuge to the changing seasons. Kiara's torchlight cut across great, smooth, shaped rocks as they crunched over old, decaying weeds and overgrowth; it bracketed the easily missed entrance to the echoing, empty space.
"See," she breathes out, brushing aside damp strands of dark hair and leaning in to nudge her companion's shoulder with a brief, sharp little smile. "Told you there was one around here somewhere. According to what I read, these caves are ancient." Her torchlight cut a soft beam of light across dust speckled air; water dripped somewhere inside and a worn pathway had been etched between the boulders; the occasional attempt at graffiti faded against the red rocks. It had been a casual inclination, to go hiking, to search out the old, overgrown cave formations around Red Rocks.
Kiara's invitation extending only a 'feeling ambitious?' via text before she'd deigned to explain her reasoning for the drive; a pair of sunglasses perched on her head and that brilliant, engaging smile ever-present as her fingers drummed against the wheel; the city limits falling behind them as the wilderness reclaimed the roadside either side of her tiny red hatchback.
The Verbena's tennis shoes kicked up tiny whirls of dust as she started into the depths; calling back over a shoulder as she did, "I wonder how far down it goes?" Her voice echoing into the reaches as she held her torch a little higher and began a slow ascension over the moss-covered side of two large rocks; pressed close enough to make for careful supports to a knowledgeable climber.
"Beautiful."
The brunette's quiet declaration as she rested for a beat; tying a sweater around her waist.
silence.
[E: don't all on your face- dex+athletics]
Dice: 4 d10 TN6 (1, 2, 4, 9) ( success x 1 )
silence.
Kiara was right, the caves were ancient. Are ancient.
There was that smell of air, that smell of something wet and clean and cool- caves weren't touched by the heat of the day or the frigid temperatures of winter. No, they were fairly predictable. Whatever lived there was accustomed to a certain lifestyle, something that was not dependent upon light. Something that was not dependent upon anything other than what crawled into one of the earth's great maws. Caves were special like that.
It was quiet outside. Some birds chirped, some crickets hummed and, occasionally, the wind deigned to rustle the leaves of a nearby tree.
Elijah liked hiking, all things said. He enjoyed being outside and in nature and actually breathing in the world around him. The response to the invitation had been quick enough, don't I always? Because he was young. Because he was starry-eyed. Because he was a number of things, and who was to say that a young man in his early twenties was anything other than ambitious? His footing wasn't steady, though the paths were worn. He had a sixth sense about him to find unsteady rocks or loose gravel. he was going to get dirty.
Attire was comfortable- tee shirt, shorts, backpack strapped firmly on and pocket watch tucked into the pocket on the side where his cell phone was intended to go. Where they were, he didn't need a phone. It was like not needing a road, but much more practical. int he modern age, who went anywhere without a cell phone? Kiara wondered how far down it went-
"Wanna find out?" the blond replied with a grin, eyes all bright and springtime green, amber in places where the rocks picked up the color.
The cave was not foreboding, not in a way that a cave was not normally for boding, a deep chasm into the belly of the earth, a place where the rocks could nestle around and be protective, be comforting. A place where the ground might drop out and one could plummet, fall, fall down deep until they hit some oubliette where one was not meant to return. Where one was to be food for some fungus or eyeless fish or some other wounded predator catching an easy break on a lost meal.
Kiara
"I thought you'd never ask." She offered a hand out to Elijah, to support his weight and help the other Awakened clamber up beside her on the top-most point of the two enormous boulders.
The rocks tapered out slightly on the other side; the hue of them a darker, bolder red where the elements hadn't been able to re-shape or dull them; the sun couldn't fade the colors inside the depths of the earth and as Kiara set her torch between her teeth momentarily, to begin a careful step-skid down the opposing side of the rocks; the light wobbled across the rock-face; setting off a thousand tiny pinpricks of light; grains of sand that had been present there for who knew how long.
The Verbena seems capable enough out here, there's a brightness to her eyes mirrored in Elijah's; a certain glow to her skin, as if being in the vestiges of nature made Kiara Woolfe all the more so herself, her dark hair flowing loose and untethered over her shoulders where she'd neglected to tie it back. She folds it over a shoulder as she slides down and lands lightly at the base of the rocks; crouching momentarily to set a palm against the smooth surface of the rock.
There's a fine layer of damp; the residue of the earth. Her torchlight finding tiny bones at edge of a crevice; a natural fold in the descending face where beyond; the trickle of water suggests there's a spring winding through the formation. The bones partially eroded; some crushed as if between a predator's teeth. The brunette studies them for a beat; her breathing soft and steady.
"Looks like a hare. Or a fox."
She re-directs the focus of her light toward a yawning gap down further.
[Just a little Life 1, let's see what's out there, shall we? Coincidental, -1 Practiced]
Dice: 3 d10 TN3 (1, 9, 10) ( success x 2 )
Kiara
[Maybe once more?]
Dice: 3 d10 TN4 (2, 3, 5) ( success x 1 )

And it was, you see, a hare. What had once been a hare, some thing that was born to be lean and swift. Something with strong legs and a fast heart rate. Something that was born to run, with a sensitive back. Something that could kick and kill itself if it was in a panic. Rabbits could be crafty, resourceful, fast, but they are fragile creatures in their own rights.
Down further, there is life. Down further, into the mouth of the cave there are tiny winged heartbeats. There are larger predators, yes, but they are sleeping somewhere. No bears in this cave but… something. Something human, yes, but something larger. Something that did not seem like the average pattern one would feel in an area like this. A heartbeat and breath that comes out and there is no sound. Kiara only knows it because she feels a Presence.
Kiara
There's a pause there. A pause while Kiara's focus seems to pull itself inward and then - push outward. The sensation of her Working; of the flood of rejuvenating energy that washes over them, the pulse of it a steady timekeeper to the sensation. Her breathing growing quieter, less audible and then, she pushes herself upright.
"There's someone else here."
Not quite hushed, or uncertain but - curious. The Verbena's eyes seem to gleam with it as she starts toward the wider opening to the deeper recesses of the cave formation; past the tiny bones and the trickling water; Kiara steps over them easily and instead focuses her attention down further, into the shadowy depths where she can feel the size and shape of tiny wings; a dozen heartbeats and patterns and there - something else.
Something bigger.
The awareness of something other draws the pagan in.
"Is someone down there?" Human reflex, perhaps. To call out, to hear her voice echoing down into the cavernous darkness.
silence.
Is someone down there? she asks.
There is a echo, or at least there should be. When Kiara calls out, all she hears is the sound of her voice hitting a wall. There should be an echo. There should be the sound of her voice bouncing off the walls of the cavern but instead there is nothing. Like she's talking to a wall. Like she's talking into curtains, because the sound just… stops. Disappears. Refracted in a way that it should only be bounced back in an unnatural environment.
---
Elijah takes a step forward, watches Kiara as she pushes herself upright. She says that there is someone here and his reaction is to stop, to slow, to calm himself and wait to see if something responds to Kiara's call but nothing does. No call back, no tweet, no chirp, nothing but the sounds of the area around them instead of what should be in front of them. His mouth presses into a fine line and he takes a second, steps away from his friend and picks up a rock. Something small and fit in the palm of his hands.
And, with a thoughtful expression, he pitches the rock into the cave. Waits to hear it bounce and ricochet around along the rocks.
Nothing.
"… oh, that's not normal."
Kiara
She'd told him when they first set foot inside the cave. That it was ancient, that nature had been at its liberty, at least here to do as it wished. She calls out and the echo is snapped off; her voice loud and close and - abruptly, stiflingly - close.
The Verbena lets out a breath and then, with a brief, contained little look at her companion when he throws a small rock as if to test the boundaries of the cave's recesses, the edge of a smile there at the corner of her mouth. The pagan's focus bleeds beyond, though. Kiara's fingers curling around her torch as if it were the conduit.
She whispers something, lifts her chin and looks. Not simply into the darkness but - through it. Into it. Casting her awareness across the thin membrane that separated their side from the beyond.
[Spirit Sight, how's it looking on the other side? Coincidental, base diff 4, maybe extending? -1 practiced rote]
Dice: 3 d10 TN3 (4, 8, 9) ( success x 3 )
silence.
She presses forward to the world between the worlds and there is nothing. There are spirits, yes. There are little creatures that personify light and the stone and the cave itself which is just as ancient as she had heard. It is strong and it is comfortable in what it is, and there are little bugs and the grass and leaves rustle but things just stop at the mouth of the cave.
At the mouth there is a salt line. Something that glows with brightness. There is a line of ash behind that. There are crystals and light and glowing blue goodness behind the line, there were signs on the walls, pictures and spirals and constellations that spoke, that whispered bring to us your offerings.
There was a path, marked in light down the mouth of the cave. Something curious housed within an ancient gathering space.
Kiara
"Oh."
It's a quiet exclamation from the brunette after a moment, the faintest of caught breaths before she releases it, relinquishes her grip around the torch and turns to look across at Elijah, the edge of her mouth curving into a stronger smile. "There's a barrier at the mouth of the cave. Something to keep things out." A beat, Kiara's expression turns thoughtful.
"Or something in."
She starts toward it, the Verbena. Following the lighted path closer to the salted line; the glow of it pulling her nearer like a beacon. Stops with her toes just before it and turns, looking back at Elijah. "Can you see it?" She drops to a crouch, the Dreamweaver. Holds a hand out just so and lets it hover there, above the threshold, looking down at the coruscating blue-white glow.
"I think - we need to give something." Kiara's eyes still on the point below her, she sets the flashlight down and shrugs off her backpack. "Like an offering or a gesture of good faith. I don't have any of my things with me, but - " She searches around on the ground and recovers a small stone (was it the one Elijah had thrown, earlier?) and brings the sharpest edge of it against her palm.
"This might be enough."

She asks if he can see it. and he approaches- perhaps more cavalier than he needs to be. He inhales slow and deep and it is will alone that makes this possible. Will alone that keeps his focus where it is and he inhales slow and deep and stops right where he needs to. Stops when the world loses definition, changes channels, becomes more or what it was meant to be instead of just a world outside of metaphor. A thing where the world has strict definition.
bring us your offering, it says.
"I wish I'd known what was in there," he replies. Elijah starts to take his backpack off and leaves it at the door.
Because this is a doorway, now. He digs through his bag to find his pocket knife. He'd seen Ian carrying one and he had since concluded that this was a worthwhile tool. His eyes scanned the area for another rock. It wasn't hard to find rocks, but finding something that he could carve Intent into. He plopped himself down, focused on whatever was in front of him. Sigils and signs and beauties that were most assuredly not in a human in origin.
"I might have something to ante up along with," he told Kiara, "it's like a shrine here... Bring us your offerings. Royal we or more than one being there?"

Kiara
The edge of the stone is sharp enough to puncture her skin with deliberate pressure applied and as Elijah's magic twines with hers; as she feels the tumultuous purpose and direction of it infuse the air, Kiara lets blood run down the edge of her hand, holds it out over that line of salt and lets the droplets drip down onto it. It's the oldest and most potent sort of summoning, for the earth witch.
That of her blood, the very essence of her lifeforce, freely given back to the earth, fed to appease whatever spirits might exist here, might keep their secrets housed beyond the easy reach of most mortals.
More than one being there?
"I'm not sure," Kiara breathes after a moment, her eyes on the slow progress of blood as it hits the earth. She looks beyond the doorway; at the glowing patterns etched to the walls. "Let's find out." She takes a sharp breath in, the brunette. Cradles her hand and pushes at the boundaries between their worlds; thrusting her perceptions; her presence over and through the Gauntlet. Like a drop of ink into water; a ricochet and sudden, alien presence.
We bring you offerings.

[Le Pause!]

silence
This was the first indication of sound, the world opens, cracks, and the barrier of silence is shredded and suddenly there are all the ambient noises of the area. The babbling of the water inside of the cave, the echo hat comes from the subtle drip of water and the rustle of leaves. The quiet, ethereal hum that resonates from the glowing etchings on the walls.

Birds, bugs, bees- anything, everything that was dampened suddenly came to life in a subtle roar before dying back down.

What came next was the sound of breathing. The rumble of footsteps of some creature too large to truly fathom. Something that ached in the roots of trees and came from the depths of the cave. It was like something as old as the earth awakened, crawled forth from the depths of the cave butstopped. There is a pause, a shudder in the air and the feeling of frigid breath yawning from the mouth.

All that is visible from the depths of the cave are eyes. Something the size of dinner plates, then saucers, then no larger than a cat. The darkness is nearly intangible, the shadows around them seem more solid. They have an audience; the shadows chitter (shadows are creatures with poor intentions, neutral at best, their aid comes with a pride. This creature is no shadow.) What walks out of the cave is tall and willow thin with long limbs and skin like marble flecked with mica. Its eyes are milkglass and form neither masculine nor feminine. Merely delicate lines wrapped in unforgiving stone. Its hair is long a gossamer strands of silver and pearl.

"The keeper of secrets welcomes you," the figure says, smooth as any diplomat, "and wishes to know your intention upon bringing its visage so close to the light."

Kiara Woolfe
The creature that walks out of the cave is not human. It has attributes that suggest it could have been, perhaps, once, something close to it but other than the vaguely humanoid limbs and the hair that falls around it in silvery strands - it is wholly and wonderfully alien. The Verbanae for her part lets out a slow breath as the world seems to rush back to greet them.

Audible cues that gave back to them the reality of where they were. In a cave, sitting with their blood freely offered to the earth. There's a cramp forming in one of Kiara's thighs where she'd settled back on it but she doesn't shift her weight, barely moves a fraction at all as the creature heeds to her call, a greeting called without direction or ambition across the Gauntlet, like blind, imprecise fingers scrabbling in the dark for something to hold to.

The keeper of secrets, it greets them with and Elijah can feel the slight shift then, in Kiara's weight; the brush of her arm against his. "We're merely travelers from the other side," she begins in a steady voice, her dark eyes set on the depths of the cave where their guest had drawn itself forward from. "We don't mean the Keeper of Secrets any harm. We come to pay our respects and ask - " There's a beat, Kiara seems to consider her words carefully, speaking slowly.

"How did you come to be here? In this place?"

silence
"It is what others ask that brings them harm, we are but vessels to the ambitions of the impermanent ones," the being says. Its voice sounds like water in crystal glasses. Tap, resonate, echo and fade.

It stands perfectly still but the wind plays on its hair, something that dances like dandelion seeds in the air. Its eyes, seemingly sightless, are directed towards the two mortals on the other side of the barrier. It does not clim through the way, though it seems... as though it stays between two worlds. As though it can, and does, exist in both but its truest form stands before them at the mouth of the cave.

Never crosses the boundary.

"We have always been, born of a nuance that shadows lack," which is met with a hiss from the gathered darkness. The being before them straightens, the temperature of the air plummets, enough that for a second Kiara and Elijah both can see their breath on the air.

The shadows stop their complaint. The air warms.

"We are but one of many, for secrets are universal. I am but snow and promises, a speaker for that which remains Unnamed."

---

Elijah stands where he is, takes in what is going on around him and can't... can't seem to look away. Can't bring himself to look away, fascinated with the cold and the beauty of the creature before them and... this is beyond words, beyond simple concepts and moves into abstraction.

What would create a being like this?

Secrets, of course. Truth, of course.

"What is the most appropriate way for us to pay our respects to the Keeper of Secrets?"

--

"By never needing our services," the being says again, "by giving us your confidence with no strings. No pretense. No asking... the impermanent are often so desperate for aid they do not understand their questions."

Not derisive. Not cruel. Just... puzzled.

Kiara Woolfe
Kiara remains kneeling on the ground near the doorway between their worlds. Her cut has long since stopped dripping blood and she rubs at the point of the injury with a near-absent repetition; lingering in the stinging reminder as the Keeper of Secrets speaks in its strange, otherworldly voice. Her eyes do tick down to the littering of salt and dust, the line of it left scattered on the earth before they return to scour the being's face.

There's a moment where spiritual politics, the strength of the one that speaks to them is tested and Kiara's breath mists as she breathes out sharply; her skin prickling in response to the sudden drop in temperature in the cave before it warms again.

-

Elijah asks how to pay their respects and Kiara sits back a little as he does; slides her palms over her knees and rests there a moment. Her mouth parting as if she meant to speak and then - "Secrets." She says, casting a look over a shoulder to the Initiate, the edge of her mouth curving.

"I think - it sustains itself on knowledge. I mean, of course it does. Something so old, what lasts longer than the truth. Especially hidden truths." Kiara's voice softens. She looks back and carefully climbs to her feet, brushing the dirt from her jeans.

"I want to learn more about whose that are Unnamed. I want to give you my secrets."

silence
"And you give them freely, for ours and only? That which resides in your mind and your heart, if stolen away shall be rent in compensation," the being says. A contract, yes- one that seemed non negotiable. When the secret is told it is no longer Kiara's or Elijah's, to tell is to another would be stealing from the spirits.

They felt the subtle flex of displeasure towards the shadows, creatures known for their secrecy, their ill-intent. Spirits are as they seem, and though the creature before them keeps secrets- lives on their truth- and seems intent on keeping its meals. It needs humans, needs their shame and needs their secrecy and needs their desire to seem as things they are not because without it what would the creature survive on?

What secrets did it keep at the dawn of time? When the world was Becoming? What echoes did it devour?

It regards them both, milky eyes seeming to bore into them. The air brings its own stillness. The earth holds its breath, waiting for the answer.

Kiara Woolfe
There's a hesitation, then.

A moment where Kiara's mouth compresses into a line and she's reaching behind her for Elijah's hand; finds his wrist and pulls him a little closer, half turning to meet his eyes, to search his expression for signs of what she's fairly sure are there in hers.

Excitement. Uncertainty. Wonder.

"If we give it a secret, it can't be told again." She says in an undertone, her dark eyes seem wider, bright with the exhilaration of their interactions with these creatures of another world. "I think - " She looks down to where she holds Elijah's wrist, feels the steady thrum of his pulse beneath her thumb. " - if we tell anyone, they'll consider it a theft."

She turns her eyes back to the Keeper of Secrets.

"I can't imagine it would hesitate to take what it considered owed." Kiara wets her lips. "What do you think?" There's a subtle constriction as the Verbenae tightens her hold around his wrist for a moment, as if the female were urging him to somehow restrain her, to keep her from making a contract she might live to regret - or not live, as the case seemed to potentially be.

But then, when had risk ever deterred Kiara Woolfe, competitive, confident creature that she was.

silence
He's just standing there, astounded and pleased and he almost forgets that he isn't standing there alone. That's the thing about telling secrets, there are moments that it feels like it's just you and the person you're telling, Kiara's hand on his wrist made him blink, turn with a light in his eyes that says allt he things that people suspected about him. Dusted with wonder, fascination, but perhaps a tad reckless.

They came for an adventure, didn't they?

But, the month had taught him some trepidation. He looks at her, just as captivating as the spirit before them with its marble skin and gossamer hair. With its sightless eyes that seemed to know precisely where they were at all times. His pulse is pounding but his breathing is steady. Sound- he's actually in his element. At the edge of a place that fascinated him beyond measure. Kalen warned him about contracts, but there was knowledge to be had.

At the price of secrecy, of course. "Secrets are Truth, right? But they're also trust- when you give a secret to someone you are giving them a knife and trusting that they won't stab you with it." A second, he drops his voice and speaks quickly and maybe he's a little excited and a little nervous but-

"If we do this and it's making good on its bargain- which would make sense, I don't see why something that thrives on Truth would be deceptive in nature, right? It's why the shadows are so damn pissy- we would have the opportunity to give definition to things that have none. This could be huge in terms of knowledge," he stops, "but... do you have anything you're willing to part with for good? A secret doesn't have to be damning, it could be... I don't know, a piece of yourself that is just for you... like, how you felt when you ate Thai for the first time or... your favorite orchestral piece, so listening to it is an affirmation of what happened here."

A second, "that's the thing with secrets, when you have to choose one that you're giving without strings you suddenly realize how much of yourself you actually want to share."

A beat.

"We could see if we could get a group rate? I... uh... don't know how you are with negotiating, but I don't think this is really up for negotiation so, uh, hmn."

Kiara Woolfe
Secrets are truth.

And the truth was - Kiara Woolfe had many she could offer that would appease a spirit such as the Keeper of Secrets. Moments of triumph, moments of utter despair. Moments she'd teetered on the brink of something profound, something terrifying. The exhilaration of the moment after she Awoke. The agony of the before. Flames and searing heat and smoke congesting her lungs.

First times. First loves. First heartbreaks.

So many beginnings and ends swirling inside her; inside Elijah, too. The perfect food source for a being such as this was humanity. These creatures with such a capacity for flaw; for sentiment; for misjudgement and misery. And compassion, too. How could any species that prided itself on intellect not also comprehend the imperfection of conscience. The probability for heroism and fatal weakness at the last moment.

Oh, humankind were vulnerable to say the least, but - resilient. Survivors, in their own way.

Kiara's heart is beating fast against her chest as Elijah speaks, her expression softens a little when he says a secret doesn't have to be damning, that it could be good, it could be cathartic, if chosen wisely enough. "I think I should do the giving. I think I have - " There's a tiny flex at the edge of the brunette's mouth, a supple little motion of her shoulders that might have passed for a shrug. "Something worth giving that I don't need. That nobody else ever needs to know."

Something I'm ashamed of, she doesn't add.

She squeezes his hand and then lets go, turns and takes a step closer to the shadows; to the glimmering, gleaming emissary. "Would you hear my secret?"

silence
She takes her steps forward and Elijah takes his back. There is distance, distance that he is willing to give, distance he knows he needs to give because overhearing this secret could be disastrous, it could be damning- it could gost either of them dearly and then where would they be?

The spirit looks at Kiara, expression calm and it regards her. Slow and measured at first and it takes its steps forward, extends its hands to her as though this were some baptismal moment. As though it would lead her past the edges of the cave, and it comes forward, to the very edge of its barrier and reaches forward, would take her hands if she gave them.

In a moment, there is a smile, and in that moment there are a thousand truths alight in its heart and is being. The wind relaxes, breathes its calming and relieved breath. The Emissary smiles, and it is at its very edges almost human.

"I would hear all that is freely given."

It waits, though, to see if she takes its hands.

Kiara Woolfe
She doesn't hesitate so much as she waits. For the spirit to step forward, to offer its hands (such as they are) out to her to touch. To penetrate the invisible barrier that held it to its world and she's aware, somewhere, in the back of her mind, the brunette, that this could be a mistake. That she's about to cross a line she cannot undo. A promise made with a spirit was, after all, a pact unlike those made with a human.

Spirits did not understand the concept of mistake, or undoing that which was done with knowledge.

It extends its hands out and Elijah can see the way the Verbenae's back straightens; see the momentary tightness between her shoulder-blades; the way tension knits there and then smooths as Kiara lifts her hands and reaches toward the Emissary; lets their fingers touch and closes her eyes; clears her mind but for the memory; spun out and suspended like a gleaming, transcendent thread ready to be plucked; drawn out and consumed by the waiting entity.

"This is my memory. Freely given," she murmurs and there's the flicker of imagery; the replay of events in Kiara's mind. Another city. Another time. Towering skyscrapers. The Empire State. A younger version of the woman before it with shorter cropped hair; dressed in a uniform; her long legs tangling with those of an older man beneath a dinner table while across from them, another spoke over a meal.

Doctor Woolfe, the echoing memory offered.

The same dark features as Kiara, that same presence. Unraveled further and another scene; a bedroom; rumpled bedcovers and the younger Kiara with the sheets drawn around her chest; biting at a thumbnail and staring down at a sleeping man beside her. More scenes. Flicked through like a picture book, a playback of moments.

Her father's face, swimming among them. Contorted and angry. Words that linger, prominent to the secret she offers: disgraced me, my wife can't find out, cost me the job and there, in the midst of it all, she says quietly:

"I sabotaged my father's career. Because he was never there. Because I could."

silence
There's a strange disconnect in that contact.

She knows that the feeling of its hands should be stone, should be something made of ice but she feels something... still cold, still cold like death in her hands, but with slender fingers and delicate wrists. Something that seems close, but not quite what she sees. Something that feels more like palid, lonely flesh.

It listens, because it knows, takes her in and does as it said. There is no judgment, there is no pleasure or pain or sorrow or anything. Just... alien curiosity, as though these experiences, the feeling of resentment and carnal desires and cruelties because in a youthful mind they were deserved (oh, that anger, it's the anger that it almost understands, memory born of all secrets told. So many secrets, so much time had passed that it feels conceptual anger but takes a moment. to truly feel it.)

There is a breath drawn in, sharp and surprised and those eyes bleed mercury tears. Unheeded, unashamed. It steps forward, and those hands- so human- part briefly from Kiara's to take her wrist. To delicately, carefully lead her to the wall where symbols and sigils glowed. It placed her hand to the wall, the one that was bleeding, wiped its tears and laid its hand over hers. The Emissary was unearthly cold, but did not leach warmth from her, merely a fact. Merely a statement.

Its thumb traced the side of hers, again saying nothing but that gesture, so small, was intent and clear. Something about that was comforting, or at least attempting to be. Stilted and unsure like some faun trying to stand and take its steps.

"... would you like to see what spirits dream into creation?"

That smile, again, almost warm. Something that was not entirely alien.

Kiara Woolfe
There's rapt fascination on the Verbenae's face as she's led toward that wall with its glowing writing etched into the stone. Her eyes, those dark, beautiful eyes, shift between the Emissary's face and the symbols carved into it; from the touch of its unearthly fingers against her skin to the stone beneath her fingertips. There's a near shiver that runs through Kiara Woolfe; a sort of anticipatory shudder.

(Later she'll realize how nearly she forgot Elijah was there with her, that he was waiting to know what had happened)

Did she want to see what spirits dreamed into creation? She roves that alien face with her eyes carefully, wholly absorbingly for a beat before she whispers, her breath catching in her throat. "Yes. Oh, yes. I want to see." There's a rush; the bolt of pure adrenaline that sends a flush to the brunette's cheeks; that has her lips parting with anticipation.

(Daughter of the earth witches, adopted child of the Wyck, they'd wandered the pathways etched into the Umbra for centuries before the Avatar Storm displaced so many, no wonder she desires the knowledge so freely, it must be tattooed into her blood)

"Show me."

silence
What joys did one have when they were eternal? All these creatures, impermanent ones, came and went. Left and ebbed and flowed into its reality before being dismissed and thought of as just another mark on the wall-

Except.

Except.

There were so few marks on the wall of the cave, so few in comparison to centuries of time that people have come and sought the aid of the Keeper of Secrets. So few things given freely, especially with those who exist within the limitations of time. There are steps to be made, away from the wall, away from the gaping darkened mouth of the cave, with its water rushing, with the barest hints of glowing Secrets along the walls, scattered on the ground. Some travel back almost into oblivion.

It does not take Kiara there.

So it is forward, again, towards the light and towards those gathered. It knows there is an audience, knows what offers are made. "Come, children," it says, fond, "I've such sights to show you."

Kiara Woolfe
She's smiling, when it turns to move forward, back toward the light; toward Elijah; who the brunette cants a smile at; this bright; supple thing that matches the gleam in her eyes. She extends a hand toward him and draws him back toward her side, slides a hand down his arm; links their fingers together and keeps him close as if in some unspoken apology for leaving him behind when she made her offering.

It has sights to show them and there's a way the Verbenae's attention fixes and tracks the Emissary that speaks of her fascination; of her bone keep desire to know - what was out there; beyond the reaches of the Umbra; beyond the scope and shape of things they knew of; could touch; see; consider with their limited senses.

She doesn't speak, Kiara, but she moves with the spirit's progress; follows; where it would lead them.

silence
Elijah bridges the gap as soon as he seems to recognize that he is allowed to do so, slides in beside Kiara and their hands interlink. There's something decidedly innocent about the gesture, the closeness, the ever-so-slight sway that comes back-and-forth while they are led on to see what truths the Emissary may bring them.

It has sights to show them, and it parts from the two mages- children, as it had called them. In truth, even the most ancient of magi would be regarded as such. Save for those with the oldest of souls, those who come and renew their pledges and promises with each passing incarnation. The Keeper of Secrets would know them, welcome them past the gates and into the depths of shadow. Hold them as welcome guest, beloved treasures. Perhaps this is a beginning for these two, or perhaps it is merely an extension of what once was long, long before.

The Emissary says nothing on this matter; the spirit is not one of deception, would not indicate that it held its gifts as anything to be disregarded.

It takes its steps away, lets out a soft hush and raises its hands high, then outward, then pulled in to its chest where fingers reach hard against where its sternum should be. Fingers drive down, past hard exterior cracked wide open and retrieved it something glowing golden. Something that has a heartbeat, that feels like winter incarnate (I am but snow and promises) and then, it turns towards the darkness in the cave.

Its steps are tentative, its literal heart laid bare and given to some darkness that tries, and nearly succeeds, in consuming all that light, all that gossammer being as it disappeared into the very pit of where it resides. The sky darkens, the sun yawns and the stars come alive. Each glowing blue light seems to hum. The Emissary returns, still holding its very essence as though it were a newborn child or a wounded bird. Something so achingly fragile. Its face still streaked with those mercurial tears.

It returns to the two mages, lifts its heart to the sky and it hovers, stays and bursts outward in light, in an image, in an illusion (or perhaps, a portal? So far, so far away) of a world that is dark.

"There was a time when your kind walked between the worlds... Petitioned Eshtarra or streaked across solar winds to the pockets you created on your own. You built empires on the sand, and your towers fell," not cruel, but there are the hints of disappointment, of sadness that it does not fully understand, "and spent so much of yourselves in those shards that you did not appreciate the spaces between..."

The whole time there was nothing to be seen there, only the barest hints and flickers of stars but Something swam across the view. Something with thousands of legs and dozens of wings. Something whose only sensical visage was a deep, yawning mouth and a single hopeful light. And that light was Hope, not a light at all but a feeling. A symbol, Hope dangled before a beast beyond comprehension that only the hopeless would reach for. A trap, indeed, but for what?

The image is discarded as they pass by a star burning cold, so very cold. The Emissary stops here, its expression fond as it reaches out, almost as if to caress the giant lurking there. Its ice, it's all ice but burned and buried beneath that frozen star there is something like potential. But not potential. Not potential but something more than just something aching to become kinetic because it is at once all it could be and less of what it was. "It has been said that which resides in the deep is beyond human comprehension... and your kind are afraid-" something reaches out, not the Emissary's hand but something quick and terrible. Something that slices through like a heated blade and a blanket, wraps around the star. Its planets go hurdling out of control. Without much warning, there is a sound that resonates not in their ears but across their skin, a vibration that rumbles like an earthquake but stops.

Where the star had been shines bright and brilliant, that sound continues and whatever enveloped the star falls apart, turns to dust and tiny asteroids.

"The impermanent are funny things, believing that the world exists but for them, that things beyond their understanding would harm them... as though they mattered so much," punctuated with that almost warm smile. The Emissary lingers on that star, and its milky eyes stay for a moment. Something contracts in its chest- oh, is this longing? There are colors to be seen that exist on a different spectrum, things that exist on too many planes for the two to truly understand and comprehend, but there it was- things that were improbable, impossible, shown and laid bare by a creature that could span light years with a swipe of its hand.

The lights began to fade and the sun came back to its full glory. Quickly, almost afraid, the Emissary reached forward to take its heart, hold its dying embers close and usher it gently back into its own chest. Wounds seal without fanfare. It shudders, closing its eyes.

"That's enough for today, children."

Kiara Woolfe
How do you begin to explain to someone who wasn't there for this how it felt to witness a spirit crack open its chest and reveal its heart to you?

How it felt to see things that were beyond comprehension or easy definition? There are moments where Kiara's grip around Elijah's hand feels stifling; she holds tight to the Initiate as if he were her only lifeline between staying in that cave to bear witness to what she'd sacrificed for and running as fast as she could.

There was a sort of terror to it, as well. A instinctual, bone deep fear of too much and not meant for us about the sights the Emissary shares with them. There are truths in the spiritual realms that not even Kiara's wisest Seers understood; places that she'd heard spoken of only in hushed whispers and old, long remembered retellings at Coven gatherings. Stories of the glory of the Verbena Realms, those mystical threads long ago lost to near all of them on Earth.

Cut off during the fury of the Avatar Storms.

Nights spent listening to Aisling talk of Winter Castle and the Autumn Circle; the legends of the Aeduna and the origins of the Pathways themselves. Kiara's heard the stories but it doesn't quite touch the reality of this - of seeing and feeling the knowledge of the spirits themselves.

-

Her eyes are bright and she's relinquished Elijah's hand by the time the Emissary reaches to reclaim its heart and press the dying embers of it back inside itself; to watch it shudder as if physically drained from the act of sharing so much with them. The Verbenae's throat works; she breathes out with a slow, careful motion and it's as the stillness fades - the sounds and scents and awareness of life return - the insects, the trickle of water, the sunlight dappling the grass outside, the dampness of the air and the way the earth smells - that Kiara seems to stir herself from the moment.

Finds her voice and offers, subdued:

"Thank you for sharing your dreams with us, Keeper of Secrets." A beat, she drops her eyes and then lets them find Elijah's face; there's wetness on Kiara's cheeks; damp tear-tracks left there at some point; she doesn't seem to even notice them as she looks back to the spirit and lifts her chin.

"Can we return and learn more, when we're ready to?"

silence
There is a moment where Elijah's hand stays interlocked with Kiara's, a moment where the young man in perpetual motion goes still, sees something in truth that is more like himself but not, but more of what he could never fathom to be living in the spaces between the stars and he is awed. Except, of course, this is not the word. Except, of course, this does not come close.

Funny, a creature so held together by words and he has a moment where he does nto have any, can not find the definition and finds that there is truth in whatever the Keeper of Secrets had shown them. There is silence, a quiet and thoughtful moment where he feels like he can't breathe. Feels like his heart won't start, feels a part of himself quieted and reminded that the world is vast, that there is wonder to be had amidst the horror-

That the horror is part of the wonder.

That moment where it hits him that this is beyond his capacity to truly understand, that by the virtue of being mortal and as he is, he can not understand all of this. HIs breathing is slow, shallow, his fingers don't leave Kiara's and there they are, clinging to the vestiges of the earth below them while the cosmos unfolds by for a second.

Eventually, he does let go.

---

The Emissary regards her, head cocks tot he side and its delicate fingers steeple in front of it while it thinks. Muses, really, because what sort of creature does not muse? There is a moment where it must think, feel the aching in its chest, the weariness in its form that it knows the shadows see. Things are not so simple here.

"Come as you will," it finally says, "we have an accord."

It nods, but turns its back and retreats into the cave again. The cave was ancient, as Kiara had suspected, and the steps go again from featherlight to something that aches in the soil, something that leaves the barest hints of front on the ground as it retreats, gossamer threads and marble.

Then shadow.

Then glowing embers.

Then a comfortable nothing. Silence returns to the cave, and the world outside of them continues in its chatter, as though nothing had occurred.

Kiara Woolfe
She watches it leave, the pagan. Watches the way it seems to gather the very edges of the universe about itself as it spins closed in its wake the very seams that kept their worlds apart. Passes out of sight and reach back into the shadows. And its a little like surfacing, then.

The cave seems to unfold around them, like a curtain gently tugged down over furniture hidden for years from gathering dust. It settles: noise, motion. The world resuming again and it's after she's watched the spirit pass from sight and after she's turned her eyes on Elijah for a long, still moment that a sudden, bright smile surfaces on her face and Kiara flings herself at him -

"Oh my God. Did that just happen? Oh my God."

- laughing, her arms around his neck and her cheek pressed against his; hot and damp, where she'd shed tears at some unspoken point. There's a thrumming, wild energy to Kiara that seems almost jarring after what they'd borne witness to. Dried blood on her palm and she turns her face to kiss Elijah's brow and then his mouth; pulling back to smile at him.

"I told you this cave was worth it." A breathed exultation of pleasure.

silence
There was a moment, sure, where he was probably supposed to have words. Probably. No one had ever accused Hermetics or being people who didn't have a shit ton of things to say at any given occasion- in truth, Elijah had yet to meet a single one that did not have a command of language that made him stare up in almost fangirl expectations- but there he was. The dust had settled, his heart was beating loud and fast and he could swear that was the only thing he could hear until-

Oh my God-
"Holy shit-"
Did that just happen?
"Holy shit that-"
Oh my God.
"-just... fucking happened!"

There is a moment where he can't come up with anything to say but she flings herself at him and it's taking him a moment to really process that the world really is vast and overwhelming like he had suspected and he can't even begin to tell Jenn about this (a shame, too, because he wondered how she would paint this. He wondered, perhaps, maybe would save some of his adventures with his mentor for Jenn. Maybe. Or maybe he would just have moments like these where the only thing he can think is curse words.)

His arms slip around her waist, grin bright, and it's a moment where he lifts, picks up and twirls in a circle with her because sometimes the only fucking response you can have is to pick someone up and twirl. He puts her down, she kisses his brows then his lips and he pulls back and he's laughing- a sound that proves joy must surely be a sacred passion.

"Oh my God," he looks up, eyes are glassy and shimmery watery for reasons that need not be explained, "ohhhh my god that was- did-" he lets out some breathless sound, "I've been looking at the stars for so long and I never knew."

Kiara Woolfe
There's a giddiness that radiates from Kiara; a way she clutches at his hands and draws them toward herself and then away, as if they were children who had just discovered the pure unadulterated joy of Christmas. Elijah is laughing and the brunette is too; some half formed; half articulated noise of exhilaration and pleasure that spills from her as they struggle to articulate what just happened.

She pushes fingers through the heavy fall of her hair and it dawns on Kiara that her flashlight is still lying by the mouth of the cave; her bag, half upturned in her quest to discover something, anything, with which to make the connection. She reclaims both, checking the feeble, dying beam of light before clicking it off and scooping her belongings up; twisting back to face Elijah with that bright, flushed excitement still high in her cheeks.

"We can come back."

She declares with a rush, her fingers momentarily curled around her palm; thumb stroking over the point where she'd sliced herself; looks down at it and then over at the boy with her, her mouth curling up at the edge. "It had more to show us, I'm sure of it." There's an edge of something solemn and hopeful in the Verbenae's voice, then. A low burn of soul deep yearning - to discover, to understand more of the world beyond theirs.

To immerse herself in the spiritual realm.

A shiver runs down her spine and Kiara starts toward Elijah; nudging into him as she passes. "I think this calls for a celebratory drink."
